How long have you/did you work with Own Your Eating?
6 months – I started in March 2019
What made you decide to give flexible eating a try? (give your back-story a little, who you are, what you do, family, any diets you’ve tried)
I finally reached the breaking point of being sick and tired of the way I looked, the way I felt, and my lack of fitness. I work 80+ hour weeks in a fast-paced, high-stress job that often involves travel or a completely booked schedule, and I had defaulted to high amounts of caffeine and grabbing whatever food happened to be available as I ran from meeting to meeting. Inevitably, the lack of daily planning resulted in very poor choices and a lack of proper nutrients – leading to bad sleep quality, daily fatigue, and weight gain. My wife Leanne had tremendous success with Own Your Eating a few years ago, becoming even more fit than she was, and ultimately her success inspired me to give it a shot.
What was the hardest part when you started out and how did you overcome that?
For the first few weeks, I felt like I was constantly stuffing food in my face, even when I wasn’t hungry, just to hit my numbers. My body eventually adjusted to finally getting the proper amount of food it needed, but it also helped to make sure I kept eating at consistent intervals throughout the entire day so that I didn’t reach the evening hours and still need a bunch of carbs or protein. It was also somewhat tough for me to be patient and trust the process – the coaching was a big help here.
What is one thing you’re most proud of?
Consistency! With such a busy lifestyle, it can be easy for me to fall back into old habits, so I’ve been thrilled that I’ve been able to stay on track and hit my target macros day after day for so many months.
What, in your opinion, has kept you consistent all this time?
Proper planning and accountability. By having my days planned out, and bringing an entire day of meals with me to the office (or even in my luggage!), it made it foolproof and automatic. I often had several “staple” meals that I would eat every single day to avoid needing to think too much about what I would need that day to hit my target numbers. As for the accountability, opting for the OYE coaching was totally worth it. The weekly check-ins were a consistent motivator to stay on track, and on my not-so-great weeks it was a huge help to have someone push me to brush it off and simply start a new day fresh.

What do you do for fitness?
Crossfit, and hotel room plyometric workouts when I’m on the road.
Anything crazy on your bucket list? (bungee jumping, sky diving?)
Auto racing! After doing my first track day a few years ago, I immediately went out and bought a race car that I’ve been working on. Hoping to do some wheel-to-wheel club racing in the future.
What is your favorite food and why?
I’m a carnivore. Bison steak is my current favorite – delicious, pairs great with vegetables, and easy to fit into my numbers.
What is your least favorite food and why?
Cottage cheese is literally the worst. After not trying it for years, I gave it a shot during my first week of tracking and couldn’t even force it down. The texture and taste just kill me.
What has been your biggest surprise about working with Own Your Eating?
That consistently eating more led to fewer inches and fewer pounds. It felt so counter-intuitive at first. Outside of the physical changes, there have been so many other unexpected benefits – improved sleep quality, improved focus and energy levels at work, better overall mood, easy to wake up and simply get up instead of dragging myself out of bed. It’s amazing what happens when you don’t eat like an asshole!

Would you recommend Own Your Eating to others and if so, why?
100% hands down, and go for the one-on-one coaching. Fueling your body properly leads to positive results in all areas of your life – both physical and mental. OYE has had an amazing effect on me and while the numbers were easy to calculate and plan, working directly with the coaches has helped me stay on track, gave me someone to bounce questions off of, and ultimately amplified my results.
